NAMI Metro Baltimore

This week the Matt Golczewski Memorial Fund, Inc. is donating $5,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Metro Baltimore affiliate to support NAMI’s #IWillListen campaign. #IWillListen brings mental health awareness and resources to college campuses, and the donation will cover the cost of bringing the program and all of its materials to Towson University this October.

Listening is one of the best ways to support a person dealing with mental health challenges and this program teaches that, while aiming to encourage open conversations about mental health thereby reducing the stigma. At least 1 in 4 college students are impacted by mental health conditions, and 40% of those students do not seek help. The main reason why is concern of stigma. For college student-athletes the rate of those affected is even higher, and they are even less likely to seek help. The stigma surrounding mental illnesses needs to be erased. A lack of understanding causes it, and the best way to combat the lack of understanding is through education. #IWillListen will improve understanding for all those who participate.
